Value Chain Collaboration

JBS® USA and Pilgrim’s® recognize that in order to achieve meaningful progress in sustainability, we must partner with other stakeholders and organizations who share our values and commitment to a sustainable future. As such, JBS USA and Pilgrim’s participate and hold leadership roles in a number of multi-stakeholder partnerships dedicated to responsibly addressing sustainability to advance continuous improvement throughout the supply chain.

A few of our active partnerships are listed below:

  1. The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef – - The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative developed to advance continuous improvement in the sustainability of the global beef value chain through leadership, science and multi-stakeholder engagement and collaboration. The GRSB envisions a world in which all aspects of the beef value chain are environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable. JBS is a founding member of GRSB, serves on the Executive Board and the Executive Committee and currently holds the Presidency.

  2. The Farmer Support Programme (FSP) - FSP is a public-private partnership that aligns stakeholders from five internationally recognized commodity roundtables – the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB), the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the Roundtable for Responsible Soy (RTRS), and the Better Sugar Initiative (BONSUCRO) - to directly support 400,000 small-holders and 400,000 workers globally in an area of no less than 750,000 hectares. FSP, in partnership with the Dutch government and Solidaridad, an international NGO based in the Netherlands with more than 25 years of experience in creating fair and sustainable supply chains, identifies and funds worthy agricultural projects around the world to promote sustainability in soy, cotton, palm oil, sugarcane and livestock production.

  3. U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef - - The U.S. Beef Stewardship Alliance includes retailers, restaurant companies, processors, beef producers, and non-governmental organizations that have come together with a common vision that eventually all aspects of the beef value chain should be environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable. The effort is in its infancy but is intended to serve as the U.S. regional roundtable, consistent with the principles and criteria identified by the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef.

  4. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Life Cycle Analysis and Sustainability Advisory Board – NCBA, the Nation’s leading trade association for U.S. cattlemen and cattlewomen, recently conducted, in collaboration with BASF, a life cycle analysis of the U.S. beef industry from 1970 to 2010. The analysis included all segments of the beef value chain, including cow-calf, feedlot, processing and retail. JBS USA was an active participant in this process and was one of only three packer/processors to provide comprehensive data from our facilities.

  5. US POULTRY and National Chicken Council Sustainability Committee - The Joint Environmental Committee of US POULTRY, the National Chicken Council and National Turkey Federation has undertaken an initiative to address sustainability at an industry level. Dr. Marty Matlock, Executive Director, Office for Sustainability, University of Arkansas will aid in development of an industry sustainability program.

  6. National Pork Board Sustainable Pork Advisory Council - The National Pork Board selected key leaders in the pork industry, including producers, processors and retailers, to identify a sustainability strategy framework for the U.S. pork industry. With the expert guidance of Dr. Marty Matlock, Executive Director, Office for Sustainability, University of Arkansas the Advisory Council identified the key areas to address pork sustainability and track industry-wide metrics to demonstrate sustainable progress.
